About Gregg S. Fisher BACK TO OVERVIEW PAGE
Gregg S. Fisher, CFA, CFP® is President and Chief Investment Officer of Gerstein Fisher, an independent full-service financial advisory firm that he founded in 1993. As Chair of the firm’s Investment Strategy Group, Gregg is ultimately responsible and accountable for all investment decisions made on behalf of Gerstein Fisher’s clients according to a philosophy that he has developed based on nearly two decades of successful money management and financial planning.
Gregg was a pioneer in introducing fee-based planning and asset class investing to individuals, believing that they deserved the same caliber of investment advice, products, and services historically afforded only to ultra-high net worth investors and large institutions. In 2011 Gerstein Fisher was named to Barron’s list of Top 100 Independent Advisors, as well as the Top 1,000 Financial Advisors list*, both of which track the performance of financial advisory firms across the country.
Gregg is a popular speaker on investment topics and is widely quoted in the financial press, including TIME magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Fortune, Forbes, SmartMoney, Business Week, and The New York Times. His blog, “Invest with Reason”, appears on Forbes.com. Gregg has also been tapped as an industry expert by various television networks, including CNBC, MSNBC, and CNN and has been a regular guest on CNBC’s “On the Money” and “Fast Money”.
Gregg’s introduction to financial services traces back to growing up working with his uncle, Ed Gerstein, in a family-owned accounting business that was started in 1977. This experience inspired Gregg to make Gerstein Fisher one of first investment firms to integrate tax planning and advice into its overall offering, with a view toward maximizing clients’ after-tax investment returns. To pay tribute to Mr. Gerstein and the formative experiences that laid the foundation for his own career, Gregg chose to incorporate his uncle’s name into the name of the firm he founded in 1993.
Gregg is currently responsible for management and oversight of the investment process at Gerstein Fisher, including portfolio management, trading, risk control, and investment strategy development. He also spearheads the firm’s many research projects on areas of study that have included momentum and valuation models and tax-efficient investment strategies. Through the Gerstein Fisher Research Center, which he founded in 2009, Gregg has partnered with leading academics in the areas of finance, risk engineering and economics to conduct research that has immediate, real-world applicability to the practice of investing. Several of these studies have been published in academic and industry journals including: The Journal of Wealth Management and Risk and Decision Analysis.
A Certified Financial Planner® and CFA charter holder, Gregg is a member of the CFA Institute, the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA), and Vistage International, which specializes in executive leadership development and CEO coaching. He is also a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), a global non-profit organization made up of company leaders from 100 countries.
Gregg holds a degree in finance from the State University of New York at Buffalo and obtained a certificate in financial planning from New York University. He has also studied at the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Fiduciary Studies.
Active in community service, Gregg is a board member of Art Start, a not-for-profit organization focused on arts education for children, and Carnegie East, a facility for older adults who need assistance with daily livingactivities. He is also involved in fundraising and assisting with charitable giving strategies for not-for-profit organizations including SUNY Downstate Medical Center and the DOME Project. In 2009, Gregg was the recipient of the Catalog For Giving’s inaugural Impact Award, which honors a philanthropist who has made a significant impact in helping deserving kids in New York City surmount the many obstacles they face through charitable involvement that goes above and beyond financial support to leverage the full extent of his or her talent, vision and resources. Gregg also serves as an adjunct professor teaching a graduate course in Personal Investment Management at Polytechnic Institute of NYU (NYU-Poly).
Gregg is a native of New York and currently resides in Scarsdale with his wife Cynthia and their two children, Abby and Josh.
