This year, we’ve seen the government bail out two companies who hold half the nation’s mortgage debt, while some of the world’s top investment banks ceased to exist, at least in their familiar form. All of this has taken place against a backdrop of plummeting residential real estate prices and an increasing inventory of unsold homes.
