The recession of 2009 has officially created a new behavioral bias: the mortgage pay-off effect. Driven by a combination of volatile equity markets and a news cycle dominated by home foreclosure headlines, we’ve had many clients come to us asking about the merits of selling their investment portfolios and using the proceeds to pay off their remaining mortgage balances.
